Brisbane Airport (BNE) Information: History and Facilities
Brisbane's very first two airports were established in the 1920s and comprised the Archerfield Aerodrome on the south-western side of the city centre, and a small runway in the suburb of Eagle Farm. Heavily used by the military during World War II, the Eagle Farm airfield quickly grew to become Brisbane's number one airport, only to be replaced by the current Brisbane Airport in the 1970s. The modern Brisbane Airport of today was built nearby and to the north, in the Cribb Island area.
In recent years and since being privatised in 1995, Brisbane Airport has grown greatly in size, to cope with increasing passenger levels. Currently the airport is being expanded at the cost of almost $350 million and this work is scheduled for completion in 2008, incorporating two new gates suitable for the Airbus A380 aircraft.
Many duty-free shops, popular speciality stores and eateries are available on level 2 of the Domestic Terminal, and also on levels 2, 3 and 4 of the International Terminal. For corporate travellers at Brisbane Airport, spacious airline lounges located in the airport's International Terminal building, include the Air New Zealand Lounge, the Qantas Club Lounge and also the Singapore Airlines Lounge.
